Landlady of the angel Inn, Westbury when entering a private upper level room saw the figure of a medieval monk walk through a wall and exit via a opposite wall. Strong Smells and cold spots have also been experienced at the angel Inn.Story below added by Sharon Stevens, ghost hunter from Wiltshire Phenomena research Team http://w-p-r.org/During an investigation on the 26th October 2006,about 6 or 7 people in all, were sat in the function room during a break when they all witnessed a column of bright white light that seemed to drift across the room and then disappear, this was seen through the view finder of a camcorder but when the people present played the film back the light did not show up on film for some strange reason. The light could not have been caused by light coming in from outside as there were no light sources in the room or coming in through the windows. If you wish to update with any extra information then please email.

One evening, a librarian from westbury was working on the second floor of the library when she quickly came aware of movement from the corner of her eye. When she turned to look, expecting to see a colleague on the floor but instead, seeing a ghostly apparition of a women taking a book from one of the bookcases, then the librarian left the room rather quicker than she entered

Coach road is rarely used today but back in the 18th century this road was regularly used by horse drawn coaches.People travelling back and forth from Westbury used this service to travel to local towns and cities via the Angel Inn located on Church road.Recently a Phantom Coach has been seen by a family walking their dog travelling along Coach road and promptly disappearing around a corner .

The photograph shows a return special charter train that stopped at Westbury on 21st October 2006 on its way back from Penzance to Paddington around 2110-2115.The locomotive is D1015 Western Champion, a former British Rail Class 52 diesel-hydraulic type 4, one of 74 such locos in use between 1961 and 1977. They were extremely common at Westbury, and from the early 70’s worked store train to and from the Somerset quarries, being sub-based at the now demolished diesel depot where Westbury BR staff are maintained them.D1015 is the only one of the 7 remaining examples left to be certified for main line use and it only makes very occasional visits to Westbury, maybe once or twice each year.

Newspaper clip from 4th August 2011 – A New experience regarding paranormal at the town council, Laverton, Westbury could be either poltergeist activities or natural phenomena of wind or even subsidence. As for this experience being a apparition, well there is always the possblility. Was the activity e.g ‘the ghost’ trying to make its awareness known to the witness by using psychokinesis (mind over matter) to open and close the doors… Hoping to pay the Laverton a visit soon and hopefully come up with that paranormal conclusion. If you wish to update with any extra information then please email.

Story by ‘anonymous’There was several rail enthusiasts present and being night-time it was necessary to use tripods and time-exposures to get decent photographs. For the Class 47 shots, three appeared perfectly normal, the loco view is not interrupted and the figures by the first coach were seen standing there at the time. The Western photo is most interesting. The time exposure period was 30 seconds meaning that the shutter was open for half a minute. There was a group of approximately 9 people with cameras/tripods formed in a short line each side of me. No one- absolutely no one- came into the area next to the loco whilst my camera was ’open’ – if they had there would be a distorted streak across the picture with a solid outline where they stopped – of course with so many people assembled taking photographs nobody else would dare walk into view. The shadowy figure to the right of the iron column is still, it does not appear to have a head and it leaves no shadow towards the camera position, which a solid object or person would do. This figure cannot be explained. I saw nothing while I was stood looking at the loco which remained in the position for 2-3 minutes. I only took the one photograph. Nobody else said anything. My wife and daughter are standing to the left of the column, they were the whole time and moved slightly, hence the fuzzy distortion to their images. No one entered or left the loco cab.The figure appears to be a person stood looking at the loco, maybe perhaps it is the sprit of a former Westbury driver or fitter from the days when ‘westerns’ were seen everyday doing their daily tasks, maybe in charge of the 0642 to Paddington, taking commuters up to London for a days work, or about to set off for Theale, Acton or Luton on yet another load of yeoman store. I hope this is the case because it is certainly something or somebody whose presence that October evening cannot be otherwise explained.Could this be a ghost? We had a Ghost , a monk , we called him Fred
many regulars had sightings and heard noises upstairs in the bar
it was creepy living there ,
we even had t shirts made with a funny ghost
on the front , with Freds bar printed on it
in the roof is a priest hole , where they used to hide the monks

Are you experiencing something strange in your home from the sound of footsteps, knockings or some other unexplained phenomenon.
Have you seen a ghost in your home.
Are you experiencing Smells or oders in the home, that can not be explained, for example pipe tobacco smells, perfume or aftershave.
Do you ever get a feeling that you are not alone in the home.
Have you seen objects moving around by unseen hands in your home or work place.
Many of these experiences are never reported because people don’t want to feel weird and odd.
People are frightened to talk because of skepticism (it’s all in your head, it’s only your eye’s playing tricks, you’re hallucinating, its a misinterpretation of something natural or some other reply) and are talked out of what may of been a real paranormal experience.
So if you are witnessing events and need someone to talk too, please post your comment below or If you prefer that you and your experience to stay private from public eyes then thats not a problem.
Please contact me on email or mobile.
I’m also available 24/7 on mobile, Tel. 07814299892

Hi Mark, here is that story that interested you that happened to me the other day that could have considerably changed my life….
I was driving through a very built up residential area which had parked cars on one side of the street. As I was driving through at a steady speed of about 25mph I saw a car ahead of me coming in the opposite direction. I remember thinking shall I speed up a bit and go past the parked cars before the other car gets too close or should I just wait.
For a split second I nearly put my foot down to pass the parked cars but something nagged me that I should wait and so I quickly pulled up. No sooner had I done that, a small child of about 4 yrs old sped out across the road on a small scooter. He went across so fast that I know there is no way that I could have avoided a collison with him, if I had taken the split second decision of driving on. The odd thing is that I never saw the children at the side of the road (there was also a older girl on a bike that had stopped on the verge when the 4yr old sped across) so there was no prompt telling me to be cautious about driving on. It was an unexplainable nag in my mind that had stopped me from making a fatal decision and I’m so glad I did, else I would now be in a totally different situation to this which I am now.
It’s can be a worrying thought of how fragile our lives are and how one small decision could change massive aspects of ours and others lives. It’s also a comforting thought that there maybe a higher force that prompts and protects us from making fateful decisions. I do a lot of miles in my job, over 30k a year and have felt situations like this before but I do believe I had some sort of guardian angel watching over me and the child that day…
A very interesting site!

Refering to the story titled ‘station’ it mentions the rail staff club. My dad Stephen McQuoid has always worked for the railway as a train driver up until recent years when he had to change due to his health to an enviromental railway person (basically a handy man). Well as a train drivers daughter I was always in the rail staff club a.k.a GWRSA nearly every weekend when I was a child, either playing pool on the pool tables or playing skittles or dominos. It has always had a lovely, friendly atmosphere, apart from one particular area. The bottom of the skittle alley is very dark and very eerie it has a door near the bottom where the sticker uppers would stand out of the way. The door leads to a tiny cramped dark little room with 2 more doors inside which I have never seen open as they never get used. I just feel this whole area is just so scary and very cold. I never used to like sticking up on my own in that tiny cramped dark room.

Around 1993/94 my boyfriend at the time and myself were travelling from Westbury back to Frome, we were trying to find my Mum who had broken down at Dilton Marsh and had been driving around in circles for what seemed like hours looking for the address she had given us. Anyhow it was about ten pm, as we headed out of Westbury under the railway bridge, just before Hilsomley.. where u have the big house up on the hill to the right of you. We saw a young girl (late teens) with blonde bobbed hair and a red or pink (i cant quite remember) 70′s style jacket on riding a bike, we pulled over and asked her directions, she was very helpful and advised us to turn around back towards westbury and turn into Dilton from there, so we drove up to a small gateway no further than 100 yrds up the road, turned around came back down the road which in all took less than a minute… expecting to see the girl and her bike again… she had gone, completely dissapeared.. bike as well… if she had gone to the local house then she was gone like lightening, even if she was in the trees they are that sparse that we would at least of seen the bike.. i would love to know if anybody else has had a similar experience. A few weeks later heading back in to Westbury we saw a shadowy figure cross the road in front of us directly underneath the railway bridge… I still get goosebumps going down that road nearly twenty years on.

Thanks for your post, Lisa.
This is the first I’ve heard of any apparitions riding bicycles in that area. This is of interest to me, as I’m always on the lookout for new experiences.
I could be wrong here but I do believe there was an accident, and somebody getting killed along that stretch of road.
Trina Murphy who lives in the Village of Dilton Marsh, runs Dilton ghost walks. Her last one was just 2 days ago.
If only you had posted this earlier, I would of passed on your experience to Her and she would of brought this up with the 40+ people on this walk.
Shall being your experience up with Trina next time I see her. I’m sure this will be of interest to her, its possible she may use it on her next walk.
thankyou.

I am conducting genealogy research. My wife is directly descended from the Bournes of Melksham who operated Hawkeridge Mills in Westbury. this was eventually sold to WIlliam Matavers who renamed the mill Angel Mill. I don’t know the history of the Angel Inn, but it dates back to the time that my wife’s ancestors lived on the property. Maybe it is their ghosts inhabiting the Angel Inn? In any case, we are interested in further research related to the Bourne family of Westbury and Melksham, and wonder if you have identified anything? We plan a visit at some point, and don’t rule out paranormal activity on our itinerary. Much thanks in advance. Ray Goodman re Katherine nee Bourne.

Sorry, but I’m unable to help you here.
Most research shall focus on Westbury and its surrounding towns and Villages, including very heavy research into the historical sides. But I’m lacking investigators.
Have you tryed the Westbury Heritage Centre?
